The story of a 1958 Nomad
6-23-13 new pics added at the bottom of the page
After the 2012 Floyd Auto Fair we found there was a new, unexpected project that needed to be done ASAP. The House of Good and Evil, starting filming very soon, was needing an old station wagon for the movie, and aparently, we had just the car they were looking for. Well, they actually needed a RUNNING car, so, time to get to work! As the 58's 348 is not available, the 68 firebird is donating its running Chevy motor and transmission for the project.
The Nomad is a beautiful car, but it has not been on the road in many years. This car was produced and sold in Los Angeles, California. It is a 348 car originally, as evidenced by is duel exhaust hangers still attached to its frame, its large diameter gas lines - still all in place and in very nice condition, and it's 'Gr' gear location on the shift indicator. This Nomad came with tinted glass, power windows and also power seats. Originally, it was Rio Red and Artic White and the interior is metallic silver. For some reason the factory decided to undercoat this car ALOT. This, of course, has preserved the underside of the car in an amazing way. The undersides of the floor pan are still painted white. Its rear end (Ratio 3:36) is also in fabulous shape.
August 30th, 2012 - With only 24 hours notice, the reality of turning this car into something the studio could photograph actors next to seemed bleak. By 3pm we had dragged the car out of the storage garage and to the location where the photos would be taken and we could start the transformation, at least on the side that would be photographed (in only black and white). While Erik and Beemer worked on reassembling some missing front end chrome, I got busy with the taping. 8 cans of rattle can paint later.......
and 5 hours of reassembling it was starting to look like something that could be photographed in black and white!!
YEAH!!!
Too bad theres still alot of work ahead for the other side!! Due to its dual appearance, Beemer, at this point, name the car 'Venus' after a cat he had recently seen with a split face and the same name. So that's how the 58 came to be called Venus!
August 31st, 2012 - The cast and crew were quite pleased with the 58 and got the photos they needed!
The Firebird really wanted to keep its motor and trans and put up a fight, but we got it!
Time to bring 'Venus' back to life!!
September 5th, 2012 I Love my job!!ses!
Time to make both sides match!
The braking system was a bit troublesome - to say the least!
Sept 9th - Well, it was a really long 5 days but Venus now runs, drives, steers and stops!! Not too bad for a car that hadn't seen a road since it blew its 348 in the 60s back in California!!
9-10-12 Venus has been remamed 'The Beast' by the crew! She behaved really well and sounded wonderfully scary!!
9-14-12 Erik & I with Christian Oliver, one of the film's stars.
